their achievements during the 2009 calendar year.
Program Requirements
- The Safety Awards Program is open to
all NPCA Producer and Producer Branch members in good standing
during the reporting period.

year, or the reporting period Jan. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2009.
- Complete and submit the attached entry
form to NPCA by Jan. 22, 2010. Please note there will be
no extension to the entry deadline. An online entry form
will also be posted on the NPCA Web site at www.precast.org/awards.
- Submitted figures must represent all
employees at each plant or location for which a separate
OSHA log or Canadian Ministry of Labor form is kept.

free of charge to the address provided on the entry form.
NPCA Excellence
in Safety Award – Platinum Level
The Platinum Level award, the highest
level of safety achievement, is a plaque presented to every
NPCA member company with zero OSHA reportable/recordable injuries
and illnesses for the award reporting period.
NPCA Excellence
in Safety Award – Gold Level
All remaining entries not qualifying
for the Platinum Level award are eligible for the Gold Level
award. In the event of an incidence rate tie, all tied applicants
will receive a plaque.
The Gold Award will be presented to the
member company posting the best reportable-injury/illness
incidence rate (IR) in each category.
NPCA Excellence
in Safety Award – Silver Level
All remaining entries not qualifying
for the Gold Level award are eligible for the Silver Level
award. In the event of an incidence rate tie, all tied applicants
will receive a plaque.
The Silver Award will be presented to the
second best reportable-injury/illness incidence rate in each
category.
NPCA Excellence
in Safety Award – Bronze Level
All remaining entries not qualifying for the Silver Level
award are eligible for the Bronze Level award. In the event
of an incidence rate tie, all tied applicants will receive
a plaque.
The Bronze Award will be presented to the
third best reportable-injury/illness incidence rate in each
category.
Certificates will be presented to all remaining
entries posting reportable-injury/illness incidence rates
lower than the most-recently released Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS) average for the precast concrete industry.
NPCA Safety Award
– Most Improved Safety Record
Entries not receiving one of the above awards are eligible
for this fifth award. In the event of an incidence rate tie,
all tied applicants will receive a plaque.
The Most Improved Safety Record award will
be presented to the entry in each category meeting all of
the following criteria:
- The plant’s injury/illness incidence
rate is lower than the average industry incidence rate,
as published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and
- The plant’s injury/illness incidence
rate represents the greatest percentage decrease from the
previous year and
- The plant submitted an application for
the 2008 NPCA Safety Awards program.
Members who believe they may not qualify
for any of the above awards are encouraged to submit applications
for the 2009 Safety Awards program in order to be eligible
for the Most Improved category next year.
Entry
The deadline for Safety Awards
entries is Jan. 22, 2010.
Awards are categorized by man-hours as follows:
Category I |
0 – 40,000 hours |
Category II |
40,001 – 80,000 hours |
Category III |
80,001 – 140,000 hours |
Category IV |
140,001 – 200,000 hours |
Category V |
200,001+ hours |
This reportable-injury/illness incidence
rate (IR) is based on the number of OSHA 300 log reportable
injuries and illnesses for each facility during the reporting
period compared to the number of hours worked. The OSHA incidence
rate formula will be used to express all entries as the number
of recordable cases per 100 employees. This is accomplished
by applying the formula listed below:
IR = (No. Recordables) (200,000)
(Total no.
hours worked)*
* Please note the total number of
hours worked should include both hourly and salaried employees.
All 2009 Safety Award winners will be presented
with Safety Award Recognition name badge ribbons during The Precast Show.
