NPCA Members Reach New Heights in Safety

For 2007, the NPCA Safety, Health and Environmental Committee revamped its Safety Awards program, making the award categories easier to understand and reintroducing the Most Improved Safety Award. The 126 safety award entries received for the 2007 program represent a total of 13,810,325 man-hours.

The Bureau of Labor statistics’ most recent data available for the precast industry cites an industry average incidence rate of 8.8. The average incidence rate calculated for NPCA safety award entrants according to the standard OSHA formula is 6.45, or 27 percent better than the industry average. The Safety, Health & Environmental Committee wishes to congratulate all NPCA member companies participating in the NPCA Safety Awards program on their exemplary safety performance in 2007.

“We are committed to equipping the precast industry with the tools they need to continue to improve their safety performance,” said Bonnie Wasson of U.S. Concrete Precast Group and chair of the Safety, Health and Environmental Committee. “We are publishing quarterly safety programs on our committee’s homepage on the NPCA Web site complete with PowerPoint presentations, precast-specific toolbox talks and safety posters to display at the plant.” The committee’s Safety Program of the Quarter is available free to all members on the Members Only portion of the Web site.

The NPCA Board of Directors is also focused on preparing precasters with the tools they need to succeed in the area of safety, according to Philip Burkhart, NPCA chairman of the board. “We have been investigating ways to deliver a precast-specific safety consultation program, and with the Safety, Health and Environmental Committee’s support, we expect to make great strides with this program in 2008,” Burkhart said. “The results speak for themselves and represent a 28 percent improvement over the average incidence rate of plants that entered last year’s Safety Awards program. As an association, we are committed to promoting safety throughout the industry, and the plants that participate in our Safety Awards program brightly reflect that commitment.”

Congratulations to the NPCA Safety Award Winners for 2007:
