MCPX 2006 Wrap-Up
With Disneyland down the street, sunny skies overhead and the ocean just a few miles away, the 2006 MCPX carried on its traditional classy show at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.
The Manufactured Concrete Products Exposition brought together 343 exhibitors spread over 103,000 net square feet for about 6,000 attendees.
MCPX is a partnership with NPCA, the American Concrete Pipe Association, the National Concrete Masonry Association, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, and joining for the first year the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute.
The annual NPCA Convention will move to the fall in conjunction with the Industry Outlook Conference, which will be held in St. Louis Nov. 3-6. This will allow more time to concentrate on education and trade show matters during MCPX. At the annual convention, the Board of Directors will elect new officers, and the Yoakum Award and the Membership Awards will be announced.
Held annually during MCPX, the NPCA Salute to Excellence recognizes precast concrete manufacturers for outstanding projects, innovative ideas, safety and plant certification. The awards were presented by NPCA Chairman of the Board Joan B. Blecha at the gala event Feb. 25 in Anaheim.
PINNACLE AWARDS
Formerly known as Gimmicks, Gadgets & Innovations, the Pinnacle Awards competition recognizes the production inventions, unique management concepts and safety strategies that precasters develop to improve quality and work more efficiently.
The Pinnacle Awards competition, sponsored by Spillman Co., was held at the Anaheim Convention Center with 21 companies making presentations in three categories: Production, Management/Marketing and Safety. The NPCA members who attended the Pinnacle Awards competition served as the judges.
A new twist added this year is the Best of Show award for the highest-scoring entry as judged by the NPCA members who attended the competition from among the three first-place winners. The Best of Show prize, indicated with an asterisk (*), includes the right to own and display a traveling trophy for the next year in the winner’s plant. Along with the trophy comes a catered luncheon for all plant employees.
Production – 1st Place
*Adjustable Pallet Stands, Norwalk Concrete Industries
The adjustable pallet stands cut form pallet set-up time by reducing the number of supports, and eliminating the need to cut steel or wood supports and the clutter they create. One person can fine-adjust elevations with no help. The stands can be used in a variety of form sizes, different types of pallets and wall thicknesses by changing the base plate.
Production – 2nd Place
Spreader Bar Stands, NC Products Oldcastle
The spreader bar stands are used to store spreader bars of all sizes. They are bolted to the floor and elevate the spreader bars about 36 inches off the floor. This eliminated the risk of injuries due to falling spreader bars and also reduced the risk of back injuries and pinches due to hooking up to spreader bars.
Management/Marketing – 1st Place
Fighting FOG Seminar, Mayer Brothers
The Fighting FOG Seminar was an all-day seminar concerning Fats, Oils and Grease with industry experts as speakers. CEU credits were available and regulators, engineers, pretreatment professionals, inspectors and a few others attended. The focus was the use of precast concrete interceptors, and design and sizing were discussed. Mayer Brothers became more widely known as a resource in this market.
Management/ Marketing – 2nd Place
Quote Sheet, Gainey’s Concrete Products
The Quote Sheet is a user-friendly spreadsheet that expedites the quote-to-job order process. Information is entered only once and automatically copied onto subsequent forms. Starting at the quote, the contact information and items are entered. The form references the items’ prices and weights and calculates totals. The fax cover is automatically generated and the yard and price per yards are automatically calculated.
Safety – 1st Place
Safety Calendar, Hy Grade Precast Concrete
The Safety Calendar raises awareness for safety both on the job and off. All employees and their family members were invited to submit pictures and slogans for a safety calendar, and prizes were awarded to the winning entries. The project got all family members involved in safety awareness.
Safety – 2nd Place
High Five Strap
Protector Tool, Shea Concrete Products
The High Five Strap Protector Tool is used to hold a strap protector to safely place the protector under the strap from ground level without climbing on the truck deck. With large precast products on fully loaded trucks, it is unsafe to walk around the deck of the truck while placing protectors under the straps. This tool enables the driver to safely tie down his loads without the possibility of falling off the truck.
