A number of resources are available to help precasters learn more about inventory
management
and to improve their inventory management processes.
Some that are readily available include:
APICS, the Association for Operations Management, maintains a body of knowledge in
operations management, including production, inventory, supply chain, materials management,
purchasing and logistics. APICS also offers certifications in inventory management that reflect
a level of expertise in the subject. (www.apics.org)
Technical Community Colleges generally offer training in inventory management, often in
association with APICS. Many are also associated with Small Business Development Centers
(SBDCs) that provide assistance to manufacturers.
The Internet also includes a number of informative resources. Try searching for “Inventory Management”
and note the overwhelming response. One of the best links provides an index to inventory control-related
sites. (www.cris.com/~kthill/sites.htm)
There are a number of consultants who will be more than glad to assist you. The only caution is to
recognize that there are differing inventory management strategies in the industry. A consultant will
generally align with one of those, and your selection of a consultant will likely determine which
strategy you use. Be sure to do some preliminary investigation, and definitely check references.
