NYDOT's Road Slab Test Signals
Bright FUture for Precast Concrete
Eight, 13-foot slabs of precast concrete may seem run of the mill, but New York’s Department of Transportation treats them like gold. They are the first building blocks en route to a potentially uniform building process to replace the Empire State’s debilitated roads and highways.
In mid-June, NYDOT will replace 100 feet of Highway 112 in Medford, N.Y., to show the efficient qualities of precast concrete road slabs. The highway is the oldest on New York’s Long Island.
Layne Urbas, vice president of Roman Stone in Bay Shore, N.Y., says the out-of-the-way location is the perfect setting for NYDOT’s test model. If the June construction goes as planned, the state transportation group could opt for more frequent use of precast road slabs in place of blacktop repairs.
The 100 feet of highway near Medford will be dug up and replaced within two days. Highway traffic interruptions are expected to be minimal as construction will be limited to evenings and early mornings.
This story will be updated on Precast Solutions Weekly and will be featured in the fall 2006 issue of Precast Solutions magazine.
